I grew up in Redcar, a small town on the North Yorkshire Coast, and it’s there that I developed my passion for photography. The natural beauty of the area has always been an inspiration to me. There is such diversity to the landscape within the area from the busy commercial Teesport, to the fishing villages layered with history and the stillness of the moorland. My interest in local history is embedded in the way I approach a subject and photography from initial research through to my approach in technical development.
I have become particularly intrigued in the relationship between photography and painting, I find the conversation between these two art forms fascinating. This has led me to research and explore the genre of Pictorialism with emphasis on experimenting with light as a medium. By blending these two art forms, I’m aiming to create more dynamic and expressive images that go beyond techniques used within traditional photography, exploring outcomes that are atmospheric and emotive and hold a level of sensitivity to a time past.
