Two Places I Call Home

This collection of work is a documentation of both the past and the present, as well as an investigation into the use of sensory and motion experiences, depicting this within a still image.

Through an investigative process I have created a series of images that compare the experience of living in a Northern coastal town and contrasting this against the transition of moving to a city. This work is not only an affectionate reflection of a place inspired by memory but is also documenting the reaction to the excitement and chaos of personally experiencing a progressive city.

I have become increasingly curious in the close connection between photography and painting. Through the layering of photographic imagery and its surface, the process helps to evoke an inner emotion that is released by being immersed within a certain environment. I have explored this sensory approach, experimenting with texture, surface and light that is similar to the impressionistic style of painting. This process has initiated an interest in finding new methods to illustrate emotion within my work, that previously had only been discussed through the written word.
